Towards 35% Efficient Concentrator Modules Based On LPI Köhler Concentrators With External Confinement Cavities

چکیده
Multijunction solar cells present a certain reflectivity on its surface that lowers its light absorption. This reflectivity produces a loss in electrical efficiency and thus a loss in global energy production for CPV systems. We present here an optical design for recovering this portion of reflected light, and thus leading to a system efficiency increase. This new design is based on an external confinement cavity, an optical element able to redirect the light reflected by the cell towards its surface again. We have proven the excellent performance of these cavities integrated in CPV modules offering outstanding results: 33.2% module electrical efficiency @Tcell=25oC and relative efficiency and Isc gains of over 6%.

In last year’s workshop I discussed the economics to be expected from ultra high efficiency PV cells [1]. In particular, I drew attention to the potential virtues of exposing comparatively small PV modules to highly concentrated sunlight from a very large solar dish. The underlying motivation behind concentrator photovoltaics (CPV) is to sufficiently reduce the amount of PV material per generat...
متن کاملPhoton trapping and energy transfer in multiple-dye plastic matrices: an efficient solar-energy concentrator.
Experiments are described illustrating enhanced photon trapping and efficient energy transfer in mixed-dye planar solar concentrators containing, for example, Rhodamine 6G and Coumarin 6. These concentrators intercept more of the solar spectrum to give an enhanced photon-flux gain that exceeds the single-dye concentrator. It is also shown that the energy absorbed by the donor dye is transferred...
متن کاملDesign and realization of transparent solar modules based on luminescent solar concentrators integrating nanostructured photonic crystals
Herein, we present a prototype of a photovoltaic module that combines a luminescent solar concentrator integrating one-dimensional photonic crystals and in-plane CuInGaSe2 (CIGS) solar cells. Highly uniform and wide-area nanostructured multilayers with photonic crystal properties were deposited by a cost-efficient and scalable liquid processing amenable to large-scale fabrication. Their role is...
